The effect of a face wall on a cellular structure during bending

Abstract

Industry 4.0 enabled great development in the field of technology, but it also brought with it new challenges not only in the field of digitization but also in the field of developing new materials. Scientists have realized that there are a large number of materials in nature that have good properties and are light at the same time. The chapter deals with the investigation of the influence of the front wall on the cell structure of the ‘Schwarz P’ type during bending. Porous specimens were designed in a 30% volume ratio with 10 × 10 × 10 mm unit cells distributed regularly in all three orthogonal axes. The total volume of the structure was 20 × 30 × 250 mm. They were made of plastic material PLA (polylactic acid) by FFF (fused filament fabrication) technology. Samples were made with one or two front walls in a sandwich manner, or without a wall. The three-point bending experimental test made it possible to record the dependence of the force load on the displacement. The measured data were processed and then the maximum bending stresses were calculated. The results clearly show the influence of the front wall, with the maximum stresses increasing with the number of walls, and this trend was best described by a second-order polynomial equation.
